Swan Valley Wineries

10 of The Best Wineries in the Swan Valley

It is absolutely no secret that I LOVE a glass of wine! Whether it be red or white, at different times of the year, both can be enjoyable. So it goes without saying that the Swan Valley region, just 25 minutes’ drive from Perth’s CBD, is one of my favourite places on earth. Therefore I have chosen to write about 10 of the Best Swan Valley Wineries and Cellar Doors to give you, the reader, the benefit of my experiences.

Please note, however, that these are in no particular order, as I love them all for different reasons.

Come with me as together we will explore some exceptional World-class Perth Wineries, and we’ll also throw in some information about some great food places, and of course, let’s not forget Swan Valley Breweries, to explore.

Our Top 10 Wineries & Cellar Doors in Perth’s Swan Valley

Sandalford Wines Swan Valley & Sandalford Estate Restaurant

Probably one of the most publicised and well-known wineries in Perth’s Swan Valley is Sandalford Wines. From their grand entrance through a magnificent set of gates into the estate to driving their long driveway through the vineyard and arriving at the main buildings, the entirety of Sandalford Estate is quite breathtaking. Comprising of the multi awarding-winning Sandalford Estate Restaurant and several function rooms of varying sizes, they have a venue and catering for all occasions.

If you are planning on dining here in the restaurant, you can rest assured that Restaurant Manager, Johnny Kyi, and Executive Chef, Andrew Mann, and their teams will have you feeling spoilt in no time at all. The food is exquisite with seasonally changing menus, and the front of house team are nothing short of exceptional.

The cellar door at Sandlaford Estate is extensive and well-serviced by the knowledgeable team behind the counter, and you can taste the entire Sandalford range. We HIGHLY recommend paying extra to taste the Sandalera, Sandalford’s flagship fortified wine.

As a massive bonus, for anyone that buys a case of Sandalford Wine, they offer FREE DELIVERY anywhere in Australia. And can undoubtedly organise cheap shipping for international guests.

Fig Tree Estate

Nestled in the ‘back blocks’ of the Swan Valley is this little gem of a winery, owned and run by winemaker, Lloyd Jenkins, and his wife, Jacqueline. The wines are fantastic, and the conversation is even better as Lloyd and Jackie welcome you into what is, essentially, the front yard of their home.

All of the wines at Fig Tree are grown, hand-picked, basket-pressed and open fermented in a very traditional way, and it is this care and attention that yields results when it comes to tasting the variety of wines on offer.

The one downside, if you can call it that, of Fig Tree Estate, is that the cellar door is only open on Saturdays and Sundays between 11am and 4.30pm, but the unique experience of being able to ‘pick the brains of the winemaker’ while you taste his wine is worth waiting for.

Tyler’s Vineyard

I absolutely LOVE this place, and you will love it too! Tyler’s Vineyard is owned and operated by Donelle and Colin Tyler, and their three kids. The Tyler’s welcome you into their quirky little winery with open arms like you are one of the family and a wine-tasting with Donelle feels like you are just sitting in their back shed having a lazy Sunday (or whatever day you go) afternoon chat.

The history of Tyler’s grenache grapevines is extensive as they date back 100 years to the earliest days of European settlement in the Swan Valley. The vines are non-irrigated, leaving it to mother nature to do her work, resulting in some great tasting wines!

One of the best things about Tyler’s Vineyard is that Donelle and Colin can either take a photo of your group in the vineyard, or grab an existing photo on your phone, and turn it into a wine bottle label to commemorate your visit. They offer this service free-of-charge when you buy some of their beautiful wine from their cellar door.

Windy Creek Estate

The Windy Creek team have been producing wines under this label since the early 1980s, and it has been Tony Cobanov heading up the operation for all of that time.

The wines are very drinkable (let’s face facts here guys, what wine ISN’T drinkable?? Haha!) and they offer a wide range of reds, whites and fortified wines to suit just about every taste.

Having opened a new, and very roomy, Cellar Door on-site recently, they can cope with larger groups, and the outlook across the vineyard is a sight to behold. Their wines are very reasonably priced, and you have to try the 2018 Verdelho or the 2017 Gold Medal winning Grenache. Very Nice!!

Providore (Coward and Black Vineyards)

Located in the same grounds as The Margaret River Chocolate Factory’s Swan Valley Headquarters, Providore’s origins are in Margaret River.  They offer a wide range of spices, jams, sauces, vinegars and oils, all of which you can try before you buy.

The venue is also the home of Coward & Black Wines, named after the company’s two founders, and offers free wine tasting, or you can choose to do a Chocolate and Wine Tasting Masterclass for $40 per person that includes a bottle of Choc Liqueur to take home with you. Bookings for the Masterclass are essential and can be made online or by calling 08 6274 4040

Coward & Black Wines are not the cheapest in the Swan Valley, but they are among the best, and it is clear that great care and attention has been given to every single bottle.

Don’t miss the 2016 Chardonnay!

Olive Farm Wines

Located on Great Northern Highway, and sharing a property with the very popular Cheese Barrel, Olive Farm Wines was established in 1829 by Thomas Walters, and hence is Western Australia’s oldest winery.

This 4th generation winery is at the forefront of innovation when it comes to bringing wine to its loyal following. Not only do they offer ‘Tour & Taste’ tours and ‘Group Wine Tastings’ including four Olive Farm wines matched with four kinds of cheese, but by appointment, they will also ‘Bring the Cellar to Your Door.’ That’s right – if you can 10 or more of your friends together, the guys at OFW will come to your home or office and hold a private tasting of 9 different wines. Now that’s something unique to add to your next dinner party, you’d have to agree.

The OFW Cellar Door is open every day between 10am-5pm, but if you’re going with a large group, I would recommend getting in touch with them to organise a self-pour Group Tasting. This is a much better way to go.

Ugly Duckling Wines

Last on our list of Swan Valley Wineries, but definitely not least, is Ugly Duckling Wines.

Let’s just say that there is nothing “ugly” about this venue.

If you’re looking for a casual place to hang out, drink wine, and socialise there is no better place than Ugly Duckling. The wines are great, the service is amazing and you can even order tasting plates to snack on while youre quaffing a glass or several of their deliciously drinkable wine.  Live music adds a great vibe on Saturdays and Sundays from some great local talent, and with the relatively new undercover area you can enjoy Ugly Duckling all year round.

Be warned however, that Ugly Duckling is hugely popular during Spring and Summer with tour buses and party buses, but don’t let that deter you because, in the case of Ugly Duckling, the more people that are there, the greater the atmosphere.

The cellar door is open 10.30am-4pm Monday to Friday, and then 10.30am-5pm Saturday and Sunday. Tommy is a credit to the whole experience with her patience and service-focussed welcoming manner.
